PHILIPPIANS

A prison Epistle (Phil. 1:7) of the Apostle Paul.
written at Rome about 62-64 A.D. and sent by Epaphroditus (2:25-30) to
the Church at Philippi.
Note Acts 16:9-40, 1 Thess. 2:2 and Acts 20:6 (A.D.53)
The Macedonian vision, prayer meeting by side of river, Lydia, seller of
purple; demon possessed girl delivered; Paul and Silas in prison, sing, are
freed by the Lord, jailer converted and baptised.
Paul had been some time in Rome (1:12) and was expecting to be released
(1:24-25 --- 2:23-24)
Epaphroditus had come from Philippi (2:25) and had become very sick,
nearly dying (2:27) but was raised up (2:27) and is now returning to Philippi
(2:28-29 ).
The epistle to the Philippians is a friendly letter, a tone of love
prevailing throughout its 4 chapters. It has more of praise and less of
censor than Paul's other epistles.
It was written to:
1. Show and promote deeper and more joyful fellowship.
a. with Paul and the ministry
b. among themselves. Note 1:27, 2:1-4, 14 4:2
(note, the words Fellowship, sane, all, and every in this
connection.)
2. Present proper Christian perfection. 1:9-11, 2:5,12-13,15,
3:3,8-16.
a. Lowliness of mind
b. To glorying in the flesh
C. Work out your own salvation for it is God which
worketh in you.
(Note, the word mind in this connection)
3. Thank them for their offering. 4:10-20.
The Theme or Central thought -- "Joyous Fellowship"
Note these words:-
1. Fellowship (Gr.koinoneo) 1:5--continuous fellowship.
2:1--fellowship of the Spirit.
3:10-fellowship of Christ's
sufferings.
Communicated 4:15--fellowship by giving
(gr.koinoneo--this word is also translated
communion, also koinonos means partaker,
partner, companion.
(Fellowship three times, communicate one time. Same root in
Greek therefore really four times.)

c. Cooperation with workers for the Lord. v.3
d. Rejoicing in the Lord. v.4
e. Moderation (forbearance-C.& H. & A.R.V.) (gentleness--Inter)
The 2nd coming in view - note 1 John 3:3
f. Freedom from anxiety. v. 6-7
The cure for anxiety is:
Prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving.
The result is:
The peace of God keeping your hearts and minds.
g. Holy-mindedness (proper meditations or proper thought life).
v.8
h. Apostolic Christianity (Paul's doctrine and life). v.9
"learned--received--heard--and seen in me" -- "do".
The result: The God of peace shall be with you. (cf.4:7a)
3. Joyous Fellowship in Giving. v. 10-20
2 Cor. 8:1-5 -- They were poor but very liberal.
Paul rejoices in the Lord because of their giving. v. 10
In abundance -- in lacking -- Paul is content. v. 11
In all --- Christ strengthened him. v. 13
